What is CAAS?
In the past decades one can observe an increase in the application of innovative science-based techniques in modern research in the field of arts and archaeology and hence, a closer cooperation between Humanities and Sciences. One of the results is the establishment of the Centre of Arts and Archaeological Sciences (CAAS), in which the Leiden Department of Arts and department of Archaeology cooperate with different departments of Delft University of Technology.
The cooperation is aimed at performing and stimulating research regarding arts and archaeology, and especially, the development and application of scientific study of material cultural heritage in its archaeological and art historical context with a focus on an effective interface among the disciplines involved.
Several years ago CAAS is established, which has resulted in intensive cooperation. Moreover, in the period 2005-2008 three times an Honours Class Program is organised very successfully, orientated on characteristic ‘CAAS themes’. Besides education, excellent cooperation exists within several research fields, including luminescence dating, photoacoustic tomography and archaeometallurgy.
